🚘 Converting Your International Driver’s Licence to a Victorian Licence

If you hold a valid overseas driver’s licence, you may be permitted to drive in Australia for a limited time. If you have recently moved to Victoria permanently, you must convert your international licence to continue driving legally.

✨ Overseas Licence Conversion – Victoria (VIC)

If you are a permanent resident or hold a permanent visa, you can drive using your overseas licence for up to 6 months from whichever date comes first:

  • The date your permanent visa was granted
  • The date you arrived in Australia (if your visa was issued before arrival)

You must complete your licence conversion within this 6-month period.

📝 Steps to Convert Your Overseas Licence

1

Prepare Your Documents

You will need:

  • Your original overseas driver’s licence
  • An official English translation (if not in English)
  • Proof of identity (e.g. passport, Medicare card)
  • Proof of Victorian address (e.g. lease, utility bill)
💡 Tip: Always check VicRoads’ identity requirements before your appointment.
2

Complete an Eyesight Test

All drivers must meet Australian eyesight standards. This test is completed at VicRoads during your appointment.

3

Provide a Medical Certificate (if required)

If you have a medical condition that could affect your driving, VicRoads may request a medical clearance before continuing.

4

Sit the Learner Permit Knowledge Test

You may need to complete this test if your overseas licence has expired, or you wait longer than 6 months to convert your licence.

📘 We can help you prepare with practice tests and theory support.
5

Pass the Hazard Perception Test

This computer-based test assesses how well you identify and respond to traffic hazards.

✔ We provide targeted lessons to help you understand exactly what assessors are looking for.

6

Pass a Practical Driving Test (if required)

Depending on your country of licence and driving history, VicRoads may require a practical drive test.

Our instructors can help you:

  • Practise local test routes (Melton, Werribee, Sunshine)
  • Improve defensive driving and hazard awareness
  • Correct habits that may cause test failure
👉 Drive Test Packages available, including test-day car hire and warm-up lessons.
7

Pay VicRoads Fees

Fees may apply for tests and licence issuance. Costs vary depending on licence type and duration.
