Driving on Your Ls (Victoria)
Congratulations on getting your Learner Permit (Ls)! Starting to drive can feel exciting and overwhelming, which is why EZ Drive Australia is here to guide you every step of the way.
What You Need Before You Start
L Plates Display
Learner drivers must display L plates on front and rear. They must be:
- Clearly visible from 20 metres
- Clean and unobstructed
- Attached securely to exterior if needed
Supervising Driver
You must be accompanied by a supervisor in the front seat who:
- Holds a full Australian licence (held for 3+ years)
- Is sober and alert at all times
- Can be a parent, friend, or EZ Drive instructor
The 120-Hour Learner Journey
If you are under 21, you must complete the following logged hours:
Tip: Driving just 2β3 hours per week allows most learners to finish within 12 months.
Logging Your Hours: Use the myLearners App (recommended) or a paper logbook. Always keep your paper logbook as backup.
Making the Most of Practice
Important Rules & Restrictions
Strictly Prohibited. No hands-free, no mounting, no navigation use while driving. Focus must be 100% on the road.
Zero Tolerance (0.00% BAC). No alcohol is permitted in your system before or during driving.
Max 100 km/h. Learners must not exceed 100 km/h, even in zones with higher posted limits.
Best to drive with only your supervisor initially. Add passengers gradually as confidence grows.
Before You Can Sit Your VicRoads Ps Test
- Hold learner permit for at least 12 continuous months
- Complete 120 logged driving hours
- Pass the Hazard Perception Test (from 17y 11m)
- Be at least 18 years old
(Learners aged 21+ have different requirements and may not need 120 logged hours)
