Yes — a parent or supervising adult is welcome to sit in the back seat.
This allows them to:
⦁ Understand how we teach road safety and driving skills
⦁ Learn how to support practice sessions at home
⦁ Meet the instructor and ask any questions
To maintain learner focus and independence, we recommend parents attend one lesson only.
Please inform your instructor in advance if a parent or guardian will be joining.

There is no minimum number of professional lessons required by VicRoads.
However, if you are under 21, VicRoads requires:
⦁ 120 hours of supervised driving
⦁ 20 hours of night driving
We generally recommend 5–10 professional lessons, depending on your experience and confidence level. Learners who train with professional instructors often have higher first-attempt pass rates and develop stronger long-term safety habits.

There are two types of costs involved:
1️⃣ Instructor & Vehicle (Test Support)
We recommend a warm-up lesson before your test to ensure confidence and familiarity with the test area.
Pricing depends on your selected EZ Drive test support package.
2️⃣ VicRoads Fees (Paid Directly to VicRoads)
These may include:
⦁ Hazard Perception Test (online or in person)
⦁ Practical Driving Test
⦁ Licence issue fees
👉 Please visit the VicRoads website for the most up-to-date fee structure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about driving lessons, the VicRoads test, and getting your licence.

Driving Lessons & Getting Started

How many driving lessons do you need to pass?

Every learner is different. If you’re starting from zero, most people need dozens of hours of practice. After your first lesson, your EZ Drive instructor will assess your driving and recommend how many lessons you’re likely to need.

What can I expect from my first driving lesson?

Your first lesson is relaxed. Your instructor will check your experience and road rule knowledge. If you're a beginner, we start with car controls in a quiet area. If experienced, we observe your driving and correct habits.

Do you drive on your first lesson?

Usually, yes. If you are brand new, you may begin with steering and basic control in a very quiet area. You are never forced to do more than you are ready for.

What do I need to bring to my lesson?
  • Your current Driver Licence or Learner Permit
  • Comfortable clothing
  • Closed-toe, non-slip shoes (no thongs or heels)
  • Glasses/contacts if required
  • A positive attitude!
Are driving lessons scary or hard?

No. Good lessons are supportive and calm. We start in low-stress areas and build skills step-by-step. Our vehicles have dual controls for safety.

Can I take lessons from family members?

Yes, you can practise with family if they hold a full Australian licence. However, professional lessons are valuable because instructors know the specific test criteria and help avoid bad habits.

Why choose automatic lessons?

Automatic cars are easier to learn in as you don't need to change gears, allowing you to focus on traffic and observation. This often leads to faster progress and less stress.

The VicRoads Driving Test

How do I prepare for my driving test in Victoria?

Take professional lessons focusing on VicRoads criteria, practise regularly in different conditions, and master manoeuvres like parking and lane changes. Your instructor will tell you when you are ready to book.

Do you have a driving lesson before the test?

Yes, we strongly recommend a warm-up lesson on test day. We review weak areas, run through manoeuvres, calm your nerves, and drive you to the VicRoads centre.

What happens in the driving test?

Typical sequence:

  • Pre-drive check (lights, horn, etc.)
  • Stage 1 drive: Low-risk streets + one manoeuvre (reverse park or 3-point turn).
  • Stage 2 drive: Busier traffic, lane changes, roundabouts.
Does VicRoads provide a car for the test?

No. VicRoads does not supply a vehicle. You must bring a roadworthy car. Most learners use their instructor’s car via a test package.

Can you fail for driving too slowly?

Yes. Driving unnecessarily slowly can obstruct traffic and create hazards, which is considered a serious error.

Can you use a reverse camera in the test?

Yes, you can use cameras and sensors, but you must predominantly look around and behind you (head checks), not just stare at the screen.

Can my driving instructor sit in with me?

In Victoria, a qualified driving instructor may sit in the front passenger seat during your test, but they cannot speak or help you.

What happens if I fail?

There is no limit to how many times you can take the test, but you must pay the booking fee again. Your instructor will help you fix problem areas before you rebook.

Learner Permit & Licensing

What is the Learner Permit Knowledge Test?

It is a computer-based test with 32 questions on road rules. You must answer at least 25 correctly to pass. You must study the Road to Solo Driving Handbook.

Can I take lessons without a theory test?

If you have an overseas licence, yes. If you are a new driver in Australia, you must pass the Learner Permit Knowledge Test and get your permit first.

How do I convert my overseas licence?

If you are a permanent resident, you must convert within 6 months. This usually involves an Eyesight Test, Hazard Perception Test, and Practical Drive Test.

How long do I have to wait to take my test?

If under 21, you must hold your Learner Permit for 12 months and complete 120 hours of driving. If you hold a valid overseas licence, the 12-month wait generally doesn't apply.

Booking, Payment & Logistics

How do I book a lesson?

Call, text, or book online via our website. You can choose your suburb, lesson type (single or package), and preferred time.

Can I reschedule or cancel?

Yes, provided you give at least 24 hours’ notice. Less than 24 hours’ notice may incur the full lesson fee.

Can I bring a family member or friend?

Yes. If it helps you feel comfortable, they can sit in the back. We recommend they join for only one or two lessons so the focus remains on your learning.

Do you provide refresher lessons?

Yes! We offer refresher lessons for licensed drivers who haven't driven in a while, senior drivers, or anyone feeling nervous on the road.
