What Are the Different Driver’s Licence Classes in Australia?

Australia uses a national driver’s licence classification system. Your licence class determines the type of vehicle you are legally allowed to drive.

As vehicles become heavier, larger, or carry more passengers, additional skills, experience, and formal assessments are required. Below is an overview aligned with VicRoads requirements.

Car Licence C

🚗

Allows you to drive most everyday vehicles, including cars, utes, vans, light trucks, tractors, and car-based motor tricycles.

Conditions
  • Carry up to 12 adults (inc. driver)
  • Vehicle GVM of 4.5 tonnes or less

Light Rigid LR

🚐

Allows you to drive vehicles with a GVM between 4.5 and 8 tonnes, or vehicles carrying more than 12 adults.

Conditions
  • Trailer must not exceed 9 tonnes GVM
  • Includes all Class C vehicles

Medium Rigid MR

🚛

Permits you to drive rigid vehicles with 2 axles and a GVM over 8 tonnes.

Conditions
  • Trailer must not exceed 9 tonnes GVM
  • Includes all Class LR vehicles

Heavy Rigid HR

🚚

Allows you to operate rigid vehicles with 3 or more axles and a GVM over 8 tonnes, plus articulated buses.

Conditions
  • Trailer must not exceed 9 tonnes GVM
  • Includes all Class MR vehicles

Heavy Combination HC

🚛🚛

Permits prime movers attached to semi-trailers over 9 tonnes GVM, or heavy combinations towing trailers over 9 tonnes GVM.

Conditions
  • Includes all Class HR vehicles

Multi Combination MC

🚚🚚🚚

Allows you to operate B-doubles and road trains.

Conditions
  • Includes all Class HC vehicles

Rider Licence R

🏍️

Allows you to drive any motorcycle or motor tricycle.

Conditions
  • Must hold appropriate rider licence/endorsement
